EXPEDIT Loft Bed
Materials: 2x EXPEDIT 4 × 2, baseboard option PERFEKT, GULLIVER option or other junior bed
description: This is my last Ikea hack, I am using a pair of 4 × 2 EXPEDITs to a single loft bed. It seems that the width of 79cm EXPEDIT is a perfect match for 'small single' mattress a UK wide is 2'6 by 6'3 long, or one of the junior IKEA beds that are around 77cmx168cm long.
Note - I am fully aware that I mix feet / inches and mm - just go with it
Ingredients
2x EXPEDIT 4 × 2
Either: 1x junior bed eg GULLIVER
oR Small bed frame (2'6 x 6'3) made by me from wood, or:
4x CLS wood 63x38mm
6x smooth 38x18mm Planed
2x 144x18mm Planed smooth wood
+ optional: 2x PERFEKT ABSTRAKT plinth (or 2 × 18 144 more wood)
Big little 6mm Perspex and some aluminum profiles that I drag
Recipe
build both EXPEDITs as instructed
either build a bed frame using the following cuts:
2x CLS wood 6 ' 3 (structure sides)
2x CLS wood 2'6 (structural extremities)
2x PS wood 144 × 18 (or PERFEKT plinth) to 6'4.1 / 2 "(containing side)
2x PS wood 144 × 18 (or PERFEKT base) to 2'6 (containing ends)
12x PS wood 38 × 18 2'6 (slatted base)
oR: Build the junior bed (GULLIVER), cut legs out and use either PS or PERFEKT timber base to compensate for a solid lateral protection, bolted to each end on the side.
Bolt everything together, and as many walls that are available. I actually used the wall mounting brackets 4x PAX wardrobes, opened the holes in the short end of the "L" to marry up to the mounting bolts at the top of each EXPEDIT, and screwing the long part in the sides of the bed, from the inside.

I built the bed frame myself to adapt a unique little and make the most of the space in my the boy's room. I do not have PERFEKT base available and do not have time to go back to the shop, but I used it on the front fascia had I had since its one less thing to paint and be a shiny finish to match turquoise and bright white EXPEDIT units. I also built the scale using CLS timber that will need painting too. Finally, the entrance to the top of the scale reads in this case really need another support rail on the wall to make it easier to get in and out so I'll be adding a couple of long LANSA handles later; in time, I added an IKEA spare handle (now discontinued).
