another way to hack a murphy bed
a while back i feature the Moddi that got moving platen bed rave reviews. This is the version of diana -. much simpler, but it works equally great
diana wrote, "live in a one bedroom apartment in central London, I really need a simple place, convenient to put guests in the night. this proves to be the perfect solution. A horizontal single folding bed which protrudes only 25 cm (10 ") of the wall
i started with a basic bed sultan landon slatted added pivoting wooden legs (with an additional screw hole to lock up when down) and a metal frame along one end (one of these narrow bars white steel used for the assembly of wall shelves, which are (thankfully) in 0 cm (79 ") lengths).
i then mounted with all the heavy screws on two short wood legs (with base screwed into the ground) which may pivot up and down. the bed was completed by straps on a mattress ikea - i chose Enebakk Sultan because he had the best combination of thinness and comfort / firmness, but then it is quite heavy in retrospect I could now choose a foam mattress slightly less comfortable, just to make things a little easier.
i then bought a piece of plywood cut exactly to measure and applied to the back of the base of the bed using sturdy Velcro tape (for easy access to the interior of the base later ) mounted to a wall shelf on top to hide the legs when they are rotated in and painted all the same color as the walls. the bed works great - and it was much cheaper and is much thinner and less intrusive than I really could have bought ready-made. most murphy beds commercially available cost over $ 2,000 and more than 30 cm thick (slightly thicker than 45 cm), so I'm really happy with my ikea hack!
