custom closet Expedit

Expedit custom closet

Materials: 7 1 x 5 Expedit shelves

description: After enduring more than 7 years of plain wire shelves in our house I wanted to give us a cleaner, more organized Master Closet and get the shoes on the floor. I just finished hardwood floor, so this seemed as good a time as any.

I started with a cleat attached to the studs with lag screws about 12 "from the floor. This allowed me to level the Expedits and wear clothes weight without tearing the drywall. (A Lesson painful has learned from an old house ...)

I sat each Expedit on the tab, use the included hardware to attach them to the drywall on the top and bottom so that they would not tip forward or slide the hold down. Since the rod for clothes would be connected to the front of the unit, I added a second stop inside the Expedit summit , attach it to the stem, then added a couple of long screws through the top of the Expedit in the tab, making sure to pass through the timber inside the Expedit. This meant I had to move equipment on top down to make room for the catch, so I drilled a new hole to move.

Suspend rods had two major challenges: the hollow structure of the Expedit could easily tear under the weight of clothing and surface chips easily when drilling / cut. I created a template for hole locations / leveling / distance for uniform wall. I bought a new, little to pierce the Expedit, hoping the sharp blade would leave less damage. I would get the full speed bit before pushing through and managed to keep the damage to a minimum.

In order to better distribute the weight, I used large fender washers to mount, spread the force across the face of the Expedit instead of pulling down bolt through the walls thin. I cut the closet rod to length and mounted with brackets store bought.

I wish Ikea Expedit was still accessory that erupted in a cubby four slots for shoes. My next project is to create my own ...
