Lofted / Raised MALM Storage Bed converts to 18″ of Storage!

smoothed / Raised Bed MALM Storage converts to 18" storage!

Making a comfortable home is a challenge everywhere, but more in a 250sq ft apartment in New York. the room measures 8ftx8ft, so please excuse the cropped well! Photos Before this all started, we slept on a boxframe and mattresses on risers with bedskirt, and under the bed stuffed with things as they may agree. We have NO closets, so it underbed storage is prime real estate. I can also only access 2 sides of the bed, so that drawer storage is out. When I saw the MALM bed storage with hinged mattress, I'm ecstatic. However, with only 11 "of clearance under the mattress, it would downgrade of 15 "game we already had. I pondered much on how to raise the bed high enough to adapt our air conditioner among other things, and below is my solution!

When all is said and done, it has lofted bed now over 18 "of clearance for storage

MATERIALS -.

-2 × 8 quality lumber cut to size

-4 × 4 board cut to the width of 2 × 8

-1/2 "x4" boards cut to 12 "length

-Many 1 1/4 "screws and washers

-2" long corner Brackets x16

- 1 1/2 "dowels

-stain

- felt carpet furniture

- a lot of patience

The bedframe is a Malm with storage, this one in particular is a full size This bed has a frame. touches the ground on all sides, and considering that it has no central support, I wanted to be sure that all parts of the bed were supported, so that the legs by putting just would not be a solution. I started by ordering 2 "x8" quality construction boards cut to size (same size / length as the footrest / headboard and side panels). I have then stained "Ebony" is actually pretty tight match at the IKEA standard "Black / Brown" color. It is also essential to any project is a friend helpful loan, and a sense of humor!

After staining, I prepped the longer side pieces by drilling holes in the ends of the dowels (parts lock securely together in the same order that the construction of Malm ). The foot board is flush to the buffet, so I positioned the ankles so that the board 2 × 8 would sit directly under the frame. I then attached 4 × 4 boards with corner supports (the Malm is supported w / legs inside in this position, so I need to create a basis here). I put furniture felt mats under the frame so that when completed the bed could slide without scratching the floor.

I then attached 1/2 "x 4" boards around the frame I built. This is to prevent Malm slide from side to side. I could not use a support because Malm pieces are hollow and can not bear the screws, so this was purely to prevent twisting / sliding bed in one way or another. I then built the Malm bed on top of my frame. You can see in the image more closely why I had to 4x4. I stepped into the void and drilled a long, wide screw through the lower leg in the 4 × 4. It seemed to be what really married the frame and Malm.

I then completed the construction of the Malm! My beautiful friend, who so kindly helped me get through this 2 day (as well as helping me paint an accent wall!) Watch enthusiastically out of the lifting frame.

so I put the mattress on top and made the bed! This thing is VERY sturdy and heavy enough that it does not move an inch. It is possible to lift the frame without disturbing your bed very well ..

And as a bonus, my accent wall finished as well!
