The Original IKEA Malm Billy Head Board and Under Bed Storage Hack

IKEA Malm Council Head Original Billy and under bed storage Hack

Malm Billy Bed head hack final 1

I desperately need more storage space in the bedroom and was frustrated that I could not effectively use the space under my original style low Malm bed or behind the headboard (as I had already hacked four 20cm deep shelves EKBY Järpen / EKBY Bjärnum for a long 2.7m behind the headboard and tables Malm night).

I liked the idea of top Malm bed, but was less enamored of having to buy a new bed that no longer comes to Birch and create me to be back AU $ 400 + ( plus the new headboard was 1m high that does not fit in my bedroom window). I manage to source a second storage unit of the hand Malm birch headboard (also abandoned by Ikea) measured but unfortunately this solution did not I did not want to lose my work night drawers table (which I like) and it would have taken the electrical items being moved. So I finally decided to bite the bullet and raise the bed myself. I must admit that I was inspired by various hacks already displayed on IkeaHackers.net ie storage headboard (April 2013) and raising a Malm bed (October 2013). But I think my hack is really an original trick ikea as its main components are manufactured from IKEA pieces of second hand

Ikea Components :.
1 x Ikea Malm queen bed and 2 x low Malm suspended nightstands (original)
1 x Ikea Malm 4 drawer set (80cm wide) (2nd original hand for $ 20 gumtree)
1 x Ikea Billy bookcase (40cm / 2m high) (second hand source for $ 15 gumtree)
1 x Ikea Billy bookcase (80cm wide 2m high) (2nd hand / original for $ 20 gumtree)

Other material
to increase the beds and nightstands: cost = AU $ 63
2 x lengths Dressed Pine (70mm x 70mm x 1.8m) ($ 30)
32 x small size screw (6G x 15mm) (pack of 50, $ 2)
8 x Mending Plate (97x20x2mm) ($ 11)

to make headboard storage components: cost = AU $ 67
4 x hinge Butt (70mm) ($ 8)
14 x Support Angle MA0002 (25x25x20x1mm) ($ 8)
2 Mending Plate (57x17x2mm) ($ 2) - for joining the two side shelves to the main unit, but in the end I did not use the
1 iron package Edging Melamine (21mm x 5m) ($ 8)
approx. 40 small screws (6G x 15mm) (pack of 50, $ 2)
16 x Bolt & Nut (8x12mm) ($ 4)
1 x length of wood (4mmx30x00mm) cut into 3 pieces (4x30x280mm) ( Free)

Instructions for raising the bed and night tables

  • Cut two lengths of pine down to the width of your bed, Malm for a queen size bed is 1.69m. Attach lengths down to the foot end and headboard using a mending plate on each side.
  • Use the remaining width for cutting blocks 4 (4mm x 50mm x 70mm) to raise two night tables with the same size. Join the two night tables using the remaining fixing plates.

And here, the bed and night tables correspondence are now 70mm higher which is just enough space to slide the drawers 4 drawer Malm set under a 60cm leaving space in the middle part of the bed perfect for storing books and magazines

Note :. if you want to use the drawers Malm Ikea bed, you will need to purchase wood that is 0mm in height to lift the bed slightly higher for these boxes because they have rollers, but it was not necessary for me my bed is on the mat and the standard drawers are easily removed

Instructions to make the headboard storage components :.

Start at the partially dismantled the two Billy bookcases. (Mine have been dismantled to climb in the car). Billy Bookcase 80cm wide will become the main storage unit Malm behind the headboard. Billy Bookcase 40cm will become two components side shelf behind the hanging bedside tables Malm

Notes :. As I had limited access to tools and absolutely no experience in carpentry, design I came up with had to be limited to cutting widths as small materials. I also tried to minimize the number of open sides that would require cutting edge laminate. For this work I used a miter saw, electric drill (and bit), two screwdrivers (flat and folded), a sander of the mouse, an iron and a Swiss Army knife.

  • first select the side "better" condition that will become your new top of the headboard (This becomes Billy Bookcase 80cm wide Side A).
  • Lie if the book from the other side 202cm long, remove the foldable support, then remove the bottom and remove the A side you will use for your new headboard upper storage unit
  • Billy Bookcase 80cm wide Side A -. should be cut 10cm and set aside for later (see drawing)
  • Billy Bookcase 80cm wide Side B. - needs to be reduced to 10cm at the end where the old part of the leg of 'closet resident support and drill new holes in the B just reconnecting side to side using original components in its new length 10cm. Once done, you will need to cut back against the new length 10cm and reinstall the back and nail it before. (I used my Swiss Army knife to do it, but I'm sure an angle grinder would work much easier if you have one handy).
  • to make the upper part of the opening of the main bed head unit, you need to steal some of the wood for the 40cm wide Billy book case. (Refer to the diagrams below for support edges S1, S2 and S3). Once they are cut (and rough edges sanded and laminated edges) you will be able to complete the Bed Head cover to the main storage unit.
  • Fix Supports S1, S2 and S3 using the original Ikea holes and fixing components. Drill suitable holes at the Billy Bookcase Large 80cm Side A to affix to the main unit using the 4 hinges and suitable screws. Then all that remains is to lift the unit by 4mm up to the other two components (84mm) that I use 3 pieces of left over wood dressed I found in the garage.
