remains Expedit become bedside table style mid-century
Materials: Expedit shelves (remnants of previous hack)
We decided to upgrade our great 4 × 4 Expedit shelf and therefore has released 6 inside shelves as part of our hack Expedit (soon to share)
They were small little squares, separating the cubes and since I need bedside table, we went with what the basis for it.
- 4x 12 inch legs furniture
- angle 4x top plates
- 4 small metal braces
- 2 surface hinges
- 1 magnet catch for the door
- 4 small metal shelves supports
- a cute button
- oak panel used on left 1/8 inches and a few pieces of Besta medium that was used
- veneer edge banding wood
1. Cut all size boards to make a cube, using the finished edge where possible for the sides represented, and unfinished edges at the top and bottom.
2. We nicked the back edge of the shelf slightly, to be able to suspend and insert the Besta support (cut to size) so it would not show.
3. Assembly: For the tops we used brackets inside so that there would no screws showing, for the rest, we used screws
4 .. We have reduced the length of the size (taking care to leave an additional interior space for the door when closed) and holes drilled inside the tray supports. To make sure we are not drilling too deep, we recorded the end of drills how far to go.
5. Screw in the top plates and angle legs.
6. We cut the door to the size from the oak panel. We had to frame inside to add thickness to her because she was so thin and would not take the hinge. You could just get the right size board . We stained, matte and used polycrylic to finish.
7. We finished the 2 edges with edge strips, dyed to match.
8. We decided to try to have the hinge show as little as possible. So we carved a little wood where the hinges would go in order to get as flush as possible hinge. We have also pierced the hinges in the side edge of the door, as well as inside the device. (= The hinge leaves are parallel with the door closed)
9. We attached a cute button found on clearance.
Overall, I would say that this project cost about $ 15. The main costs were the legs and hardware. The next step will probably be to repaint the white of the unit (primary, more white paint) while keeping the edge strips and door with wood stain look contrast).
