Mandal Madness: Turn your bed into a storage bed and get a wardrobe almost free!
Hi everyone ... here the question is how to turn your bed into a storage bed
me and my wife arrived at this point there is some time. We chose a bed without storage, but we had a lot to store ... and then walk in the IKEA store, we had the inspiration Mandal is the answer
Below our bed headroom is 19.5 cm high, so I had to find a storage structure with no larger drawer that.
Mandal bed is a little bigger, but I checked the assembly instructions and noticed that it was possible to obtain a structure no larger than 19.5 cm. All you have to do is not to assemble the lower Mandal bed, which is the foot. You just have to let the "drawer" cabinet sitting on the floor
Now something to say about the finish. our room is definitely classic, nothing to do with the Mandal finish. So I decided to turn on "sugar" white
start :.
1. I started by sanding external parties, then I painted them first with a coat of primer paint and finish with 2 layers of color;
The same procedure for birch frame and drawer fronts, but I need a little more sanding to them. I uproot white acrylic paint, but I had to define the surface a little rough to help primary sticky paint.
2. When the paint is dry, I gathered the frame, but the lower part, one that should be in contact with the ground; it means I skipped steps 12 through 25 of the installation instructions;
3. Now the point is: Step 12 is very important, because it is the central support for the entire frame; I just replaced the support provided with a larger one, allow it to reach the ground;
4. I partly did step 16, the assembly that the longer shafts to complete the frame;
5. At this point, the lower part of my storage was ready, but I did not get full of dust, so I decided to cover it; I used a weed control fabric, it was a good and cheap solution; I arranged with some bugs;
The following image shows the central support, upholstered
6. I was ready to step 26, I turned the frame upside down;
7. I met the drawer slides;
8. Mandal storage bed is a real bed, but I do not need a bed, and I did not need to include the slats; So I jumped the steps 28 and 29; instead, I decided to cover my upper storage with sheets of hardboard; I added two small wooden stands in the middle;
9. Final steps: drawers; I have assembled accurately, but worked on finishing a little, to meet the style of the room ...
10. the hard part: we have moved the frame under our bed;
This step proved to be a bit more difficult than expected: you have made a few mistakes in estimating length, but the fact is that the framework did not fit. So we have removed and I had
- remove the top cover;
- having 2 blocks;
- fill the screw holes with putty;
- painting the new exhibits;
The result was certainly better than expected ...
That part was as boring as unexpected, and I have no pictures of that stage. But I found a way to benefit from such an unexpected dismount. There was one thing that did not please me at all: the drawers do not fill all the available space. So I added two shelves behind the drawers. I have no pictures, so I painted one of the shelves just to let you know what I mean
I tried to take a picture of shelf after reassembling the frame of the open hole of a drawer; sorry for the quality of the image ...
And now the very end result:
well, I'm really happy with what I am, but I watched the bed frame remains Mandal ...
and could not stop thinking that we need a wardrobe to the bathroom ... 14 solid pine slats, 7 cm wide, 135 cm long while ... I decided, turn the drill back into the case, and embarked for the new adventure.
My idea was to make a cabinet 60 cm wide and 40 cm deep, and not greater than 150 cm. I decided to use the slats for the side wall of the cabinet. So the best fit to the desired depth was 6 blades on each side: 6 x 7 cm = 42 cm. And I had two spare blades in case of problems ...
1. I started by assembling 6 slats to make the side walls;
I used two wooden flat strips in the middle (section 20 mm x 45 mm), which will serve as shelf supports and 2 square (30 mm ) wood strips in the corners, which help me get right angles.
2. Once completed the two sides, I added two planks of wood (fir), one on top and a bottom;
3. I added two strips on the back to increase the strength and stability;
4. I started designing the door: one gate in classic style, with a frame and filled with fir wood strips seal; I do not pose a problem, so decided to use replacement blades for the frame (long sides);
5. slats were only 2 cm deep, so I added some bands to increase total depth of 3 cm; I added the strips in the inside of the door; I had this depth for the hinges;
6. Then I painted the furniture and door: first the primer ...
7. and paint finishes: white body, and bright "lime" green for the door;
8. I mounted hinges
9. and feet feltres with
10. Adding a handle ...
11. .. And moved the cabinet in its place!
12. Later, I added a magnetic closure.
13. Finally, I made the shelves, with a smart solution for storing tools washing stage ...
There. Below you can see the Mandal parts that exist in this office, I have stressed them!
Bye bye
