sektion IKEA Hack: DIY Platform Bed
This video shows you how to transform seven standard IKEA cabinets sektion cuisine in a platform bed with storage underneath. It is a perfect solution for anyone with limited closet or attic
The estimated cost of the project was $ 480, roughly divided as follows :.
$ 355 - Offices
$ 85 - Lumber
$ 40 - wall paneling, carpet, buttons
I had a number of questions about specific cabinets used. Keep in mind, you can do this project with any brand or style as long as they are wardrobes. To my cabinets, go to ikea.com and watch their wardrobes to sektion. The cabinet sizes are shown in the video at 0:34. How to choose the cheapest doors (white Häggeby)
. NOTE: The smallest step is actually an open cabinet TUTEMO (IKEA item # 802.783.53) laid on its side. This cabinet measures 9 x 14 3/4 x 15. It is not the exact size shown in my design, but it is the closest I could get.
The bed was tested with three full-sized adults and two dogs so I'm not worried about the weight capacity. The "steps" are very strong and does not flex under my weight (I'm a big guy). Really, do not worry about weight.
If you live in a rented apartment and are concerned about drilling holes in walls, seriously thinking about building this bed If you can not (or will not) spackle holes before moving, if you really be considering such a project aggressively yourself ?? You can certainly adapt my design to be free-standing; make sure it is well supported below. Keep in mind that the whole structure must be disassembled to move (do not glue it all together!)
A small detail I omitted Video :. I installed four plastic furniture glides under each cabinet (one in each corner) to keep them on the ground about 1/4 ". These will prevent the cabinet from scratching the floor, and prevent the doors from rubbing on the ground. If you have carpet, you might need to build even higher cabinets to prevent doors from rubbing on the carpet.
Several people have asked if it could be done for free so they do not need -standing attach to the wall. If you want to structurally integrate the cabinets in the design, as I did here, I recommend fixing the wall because the wall provides a tremendous amount of stability. If you want to build a bed like this without the fix on the walls, start with a standalone bed frame like this and add cabinets to enclose.
